Uniting Effort Project. Getting actionable insights on addressing youth crime in Rockhampton through Mindhive’s platform.

Abstract

The Rockhampton Community Based Crime Action Committees (CBCAC) has utiliesed Mindhive platform to start an online discussion on the ‘Uniting Effort’ project. The Uniting Effort project  aims to scope, define and propose approaches to bring all local organisations involved in addressing the complex issues underlying the emergence of youth crime. Social media marketing, media releases, and engagement activities boosted the awareness and reach. The campaign eventually brought in engagement and awareness of over 1,000 people from a range of professions and locations.

Introduction

The Rockhampton CBCAC has sought out the Mindhive platform to crowd source collective insight to develop a pilot structured and systemised approach for ongoing collaboration and synergies across Government, Business, Education and Civil Society.

The case study

CBCAC has set up a discussion on Mindhives platform to determine how to

address complex and intertwined youth issues, including but not limited to crime, disengagement from education and employment, family breakdown and domestic violence, lack of family role models, social and emotional well-being, and undiagnosed health issues such as FASD.

The Uniting Effort Project discussion explored twevele questions over three weeks. Throughout this time media release, social media, Zoom tanks, Launches and EDMs were used to engage the public and draw new participants into the discussion.

Results

Overall, this discussion had 50% of participants engage in the discussion. There were 63 participants involved and of the 33 who contributed, there were 171 comments, and 431 likes in the discussion. The ideation was made up of 19 insights which included 228 highlights, 25 comments and 23 votes. The top four voted ideations were:

  • Redefine Education, Education is not a ‘one size fits all’ for all young people. Education needs to prepare young people with the skills for life, learning and work.

  • Funding for a Back Bone Agency: Backbone agencies come in varying structures and systems. A backbone agency should be independent, have strong community relationships, build collective effort, and develop a collaborative, community-endorsed process to distribute and manage to fund locally.

  • Localised decision-making for funding expenditure: Empower local communities to manage and distribute funding that supports effective and efficient programs that provide positive outcomes for young people.

  • Collaborative effort: Strengthening, educating, inspiring and empowering communities to work together, set goals and solve problems.

Conclusion

At the end of the discussion CBCAC gained valuable insights from around the world on how to tackle youth crime in Rockhampton. These insights provide CBCAC with actionable tasks that they can implement.
